Privacy Policy
Last updated 23 October 2026
Attune holds some of the most private things in your life: the conversation between you and the person you love, and what you write when no one else is reading. This policy explains exactly what we collect, what we do with it, who else can see it, and how you take it with you or delete it.
The short version
- We never sell your data, never show ads, and use no advertising or analytics trackers.
- Your chat is not end-to-end encrypted. Attune's safety features and AI insights need to read it on our servers. It is encrypted in transit and at rest, and access is tightly restricted.
- Some features send text to Google's Gemini AI to work. Google processes it for us only and does not use it to train its models. The features that read your partner's messages only switch on when you both agree.
- What you learn about yourself stays yours. Your journal, private insights and your part in a pattern are never shown to your partner.
- Safety alerts come from fixed rules, not AI, and go only to the person who may be at risk.
- You can download everything, and delete your account at any time from inside the app.
This summary is here to help. The full text below is what applies.
01Who we are
Attune is made by Bars Opus, an independent studio based in Accra, Ghana (“Bars Opus”, “we”, “us”). We decide how and why your personal data is used, which makes us its controller (the “data controller” under Ghana's Data Protection Act, 2012, and under the EU and UK GDPR).
This policy covers the Attune app for iPhone and Android and the Attune pages of barsopus.com. For anything about your data, write to privacy@barsopus.com.
02What we collect
We collect only what Attune needs to work. Most of it is what you put in yourself.
Your account
- Phone number, which is how you sign in (with a one-time code sent by SMS or WhatsApp).
- Your profile: display name, username, photo, a short bio if you add one, your relationship status (single or taken), your time zone, and an optional home area you choose for location features.
- A record of when you accepted these terms.
Your chat with your partner
- Messages, photos, voice notes and videos you send, reactions, pinned messages, and earlier versions of messages you edit. Photos have their location and camera details removed on your phone before they are sent.
- Read and “seen” receipts, but only if you both turn them on.
What you write for yourself
- Your Reflection Journal, weekly check-ins, and quiz answers and results (such as attachment and communication style).
- The private insights Attune gives you about your own patterns.
What you build together
- Plans, goals, budgets, notes, moments, reminders and family birthdays you add, game answers (including the 36 Questions), and appreciation cards.
- Posts and comments you write in Attune's community spaces, which other Attune users can read.
Location, only if you choose to use it
- Couple Map (off unless you switch it on): while the app is open, your phone checks your approximate position about every 15 minutes. Our servers keep only a rough area of about 1 km, plus city, country and time zone — never your exact coordinates — and delete it after 7 days.
- A place you deliberately share in the chat or pin to your story, at the precision you chose.
- Attune never tracks your location in the background, when the app is closed.
Your calendar, only if you connect it
Attune reads your phone's calendar on your phone and uploads only the times you are busy, rounded to the half hour, for the next 14 days. Event titles, places and guests never leave your phone.
If you create a calendar subscription link for your Together plans, anyone who has that link can see those plans' titles, notes and places. Share it only with people you trust.
Device and technical information
- A notification token so we can send you notifications, and the name and type of each device you are signed in on, so you can see and sign out of them.
- Standard server records, such as IP addresses, kept by our hosting provider to run and protect the service.
What we do not collect
We do not collect your date of birth, gender, contacts list, health or menstrual data, or payment details. We use no advertising identifiers, no analytics or tracking tools, and no cookies in the app.
03Sensitive information
Some of what you share in Attune can reveal very personal things: your mental and emotional health, your sex life (for example in intimate game modes), and whether you may be experiencing abuse. Data protection law treats this as special category (or “sensitive”) data.
We process it only to give you the features you choose to use, on the basis of your explicit consent, which you give when you accept this policy and turn those features on. You can withdraw it at any time by turning the feature off or deleting the content or your account. We never use it for advertising, and we never sell it.
04How we use your data
- To run Attune: sign you in, deliver your messages, keep your shared space in sync, and send the notifications you have allowed.
- To give you insights into communication patterns, using AI (see the next section).
- To keep people safe: to detect possible abuse in the chat and offer support to the person at risk (see “Safety features”).
- To protect the service: preventing fraud and misuse, enforcing our Terms, and keeping Attune secure.
- To meet legal duties, such as answering valid legal requests.
We do not use your data for advertising, we do not build profiles of you to sell, and we do not make decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects by automated means.
05How Attune uses AI
Attune uses Google Gemini, through Google's paid API, for its AI features. Google acts as our processor: it handles the text only to return a result to us, under terms that bar it from using that text to train its models. It may keep requests for a short period to detect abuse of its service, as its terms allow. Attune itself never uses your messages to train any AI model.
What each feature sends:
| Feature | What is sent to the AI | Who sees the result |
|---|---|---|
| Pattern analysis of your chat | Recent messages from both of you, and your communication-style results | Shared patterns go to you both. Your role in a pattern goes to you only. |
| Pulse and Verdict | Only summaries already derived from your activity. Your raw messages are never sent. | You both |
| “Help me say this” | Only the draft you write, when you ask for help with it | You only. Your partner receives the message you send, with no sign that you had help. |
| Ask Attune and AI Sessions | The message you pick and the messages around it, or messages you both approve. These only work after both of you consent, and either of you can withdraw. | The person who asked, unless you choose to share |
| Reflection Journal | The text of your entry | You only |
| 36 Questions reflection | Both your answers, after you have both answered | You both |
| Healing mode | Your own results and private insights | You only |
AI can be wrong. Its insights describe patterns; they are never a diagnosis, a judgement of either of you, or advice to stay or leave. Every result passes rules that stop it blaming or labelling a partner. We keep a record of each AI request — which feature, when, and how much it used — for 90 days, without the text itself.
If a safety concern is detected in a couple's chat, background AI analysis of that chat stops for 180 days.
06What your partner can see
Attune is built so that what is shared is clear, and what is private stays private.
Shared with your partner
- Your chat, and everything you send in it.
- Shared Pulse dimensions, the Verdict, relationship patterns, plans, moments, reminders and your shared calendar.
- Game answers, but only once you have both answered.
- Your rough area on the Couple Map and places you choose to share, if you use them.
- Quiz results, only if you choose to share them.
Never shown to your partner
- Your journal, check-ins and private insights.
- Your part in any pattern. Attune never produces a report that compares you or combines both partners' private insights.
- Your emotional safety score and your attachment results.
- That you used “Help me say this”.
- Any safety alert or safety check you see.
07Safety features
To help protect people from abuse, Attune checks chat messages on our servers for a fixed list of phrases associated with threats, isolation and controlling behaviour. This uses set rules, not AI, so it works even when AI features are off or unavailable.
- If something is detected, only the person who may be at risk is told, privately, and offered support resources. The sender is never told.
- We keep a record of the safety event so the feature can work over time. It does not record who sent the message, and when an account is deleted its safety records are made anonymous.
- When you write something in the AI features that suggests you may be at risk of harm, Attune skips the AI, shows you resources, and saves nothing.
These features are best-effort and can miss things. Attune is not an emergency service and cannot contact anyone for you. If you are in danger, call your local emergency number.
09Where your data is stored
Your data is stored in Ireland, in the European Union. Some of the providers above may process it in other countries, including the United States. When data leaves your country, we rely on safeguards the law recognises, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses, so it stays protected to the same standard.
10How long we keep it
| Data | How long |
|---|---|
| Your account and personal data (journal, insights, quizzes) | Until you delete them or your account |
| Your shared chat and relationship data | While the relationship is active or paused. After it ends: 30 days you can both still read it, then it is archived (no one can open it), then permanently deleted 12 months later. |
| View-once photos and videos | Deleted once they have been viewed |
| Stories | Shown for 24 hours, then kept in your archive until you delete them or the relationship’s data is deleted |
| Couple Map position | 7 days, and straight away if you switch it off |
| Records of AI requests (no text) | 90 days |
| Your data export files | 7 days |
| Safety records | Kept to protect people; made anonymous when an account is deleted |
We may keep data longer only where the law requires it or it is needed for a legal claim. Copies in our hosting provider's backups are overwritten on a rolling basis.
11When a relationship ends
- Either of you can end the relationship in Attune. The other person is not sent a notification; they will see it when they next open the app.
- For 30 days afterwards you can both still read your chat and shared history, but no one can add to it. Either of you can close your side sooner.
- Then the chat is archived and can no longer be opened by either of you. It is permanently deleted 12 months after that.
- Your own journal, private insights and other personal data stay with you, separate from the relationship.
- If you want to keep a copy of your conversation, download your data before the 30-day window closes.
12Your rights and choices
Wherever you live, you can:
- Get a copy of your data with “Download my data” in the app: a ZIP file with your chat (your partner's messages included, as they are part of your conversation), media, journal, plans and more. You can request one every 24 hours, and the file is available for 7 days.
- Correct your details in the app, or ask us to.
- Delete your content, or your whole account from Settings (see the next section).
- Withdraw consent to features that rely on it, such as the AI features, the Couple Map or calendar access, by switching them off.
- Object to or ask us to restrict how we use your data.
- Complain to a data protection authority: in Ghana, the Data Protection Commission; in the EU, the authority in your country; in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office.
For anything you cannot do in the app, write to privacy@barsopus.com. We will answer within one month, and we may need to confirm it is really you first. We will never treat you differently for using your rights.
If you live in California or another US state with a privacy law: we do not sell or “share” your personal information for targeted advertising, and we use sensitive information only to provide the features you ask for. You have the rights above to know, access, correct and delete your information.
13Deleting your account
You can delete your account at any time in Settings. It happens straight away; there is no waiting period, and it cannot be undone.
- Your profile, journal, private insights, quiz results, photos and other personal data are deleted. Media files are removed from storage within minutes.
- The messages you sent are removed from your partner's chat. Shared games you played together are deleted too.
- Your relationship ends. Your partner keeps read-only access to what remains for 30 days; shared relationship summaries such as Pulse and the Verdict are then deleted with the relationship, 12 months after it is archived.
- We keep a short record that you asked for deletion, so we can show we did it, and anonymous safety records.
14How we protect it
- Everything travels encrypted (TLS) and is encrypted where it is stored.
- Database rules make sure each person can reach only their own data and the space they share with their partner. Photos and files are kept private and opened through links that expire within minutes.
- The copy of your chat stored on your phone is encrypted, with its key held in your phone's secure storage.
- You can protect Attune with its own PIN, use quick exit to switch instantly to a neutral screen, and sign out other devices.
- Very few people at Bars Opus can access production data, and only when needed.
Attune is not end-to-end encrypted. Our servers can read your messages, because the safety features and AI insights need them. We chose this deliberately, and we protect that access as closely as we can. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach puts your data at risk, we will tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
15Children
Attune is for adults. You must be 18 or older to use it. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18; if we learn that we have, we will delete the account and its data. If you believe a child is using Attune, tell us at privacy@barsopus.com.
16Notifications and email
We send notifications for things like new messages, reminders and plans you have set up, and you can turn them off in Settings or on your phone. Message previews are off unless you turn them on. Pausing, ending or deleting never notifies your partner. We do not send marketing emails.
17Changes to this policy
When we change how Attune handles your data, we update this policy first and change the date at the top. If the change is significant — such as a new kind of data or a new use of AI — we will tell you in the app before it takes effect, and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
