Why Attune
Most of us learn how to love by trial and error, and repeat the same errors for years. We built Attune because we think it can be different: that if you can see the patterns between you clearly, you can choose what to do about them.
In four lines
- Understanding comes before change. Attune exists to help you see what is really happening between you.
- It reflects patterns back to you. It never diagnoses, judges, or tells you what to decide.
- The pattern is shared. Your part in it is yours alone.
- It is built to be worth returning to, never to be hard to leave.
01The same fight, in different clothes
Most people repeat the same relationship mistakes for years. Not because they are broken, but because they are flying blind. Nobody gets an honest picture of their own relationship. Advice is written for everyone, which means it is written for no one.
And memory is not a fair witness. It holds on to the worst nights and quietly lets go of the good weeks, the repaired arguments, the small moments of real closeness. A couple who says “we always fight about this” may have worked it out cleanly four times in the last six months, and never noticed.
02What we believe
Understanding comes before change. A person who can see the pattern they fall into when they feel unheard is not the same person they were before they saw it. A couple who can name the need underneath their recurring argument is not the same couple they were before they named it.
Attune's job is to make that understanding possible. What you do with it is entirely yours.
03What Attune is
Attune is a private space for the two of you: a chat for this one relationship, and a shared place to plan, remember and play together. Underneath it is an intelligence that learns the shape of your relationship over time, from the things you would do anyway, and gives it back to you as clarity.
You do not have to fill in forms or keep a diary for it to work. You only have to be in your relationship. The understanding builds as you live.
04What Attune is not
- Not a therapist. Attune notices patterns. It does not diagnose, treat, or put labels on people. Those belong to trained professionals.
- Not a judge. It will never tell you whether your relationship is good or bad, or whether to stay or go. That decision belongs to the people living it.
- Not a weapon. It helps you understand yourself. It never builds a case against your partner, and it cannot produce a sentence like “your partner withdraws.”
- Not a companion. Its AI writes observations about your own relationship. It does not pretend to be a friend, and it never stands in for the person you love.
- Not a game you are meant to win. No streaks, no badges, no leaderboards, no scores that turn intimacy into a number to beat.
05The pattern is shared. Your part is yours.
When Attune notices a pattern between you, you both see it. But how each of you contributes to it is shown only to you, about you. There is no couple report card, no ranking of who tried harder, and no combined view of your private insights — not now, and not in any future version.
That is not just a setting. It is built into how Attune stores and shows your data, so that it cannot quietly change.
06Built for the hard moments
Anything can work on a good day. Attune is designed for the other ones: after an argument, during a heavy week, when you are tired, flooded or hurting.
- “Help me say this” sits in the message box, for when you are about to send something you might regret. It offers a way to say the hard thing without the blame, and you choose what to send. The other person never knows you asked.
- The weekly check-in takes seconds, not effort.
- Support resources are always close at hand, and always free.
07A quiet net
Some relationships are not safe. When words appear in a chat that may signal a threat or controlling behaviour, Attune quietly offers support to the person who may be at risk — never to the sender, and never with a notification that says why. A quick exit switches the app to a neutral screen in an instant, for someone whose phone may be watched.
This net is built from fixed rules rather than AI, so it keeps working even if everything else stops. It cannot catch everything, and we would rather say that plainly than promise a safety no app can guarantee.
08Worth returning to, never hard to leave
Many apps are built to make leaving feel painful. We think that is the wrong way round. Attune should earn its place in your life by genuinely understanding you better over time — and if it ever stops doing that, you should be free to go.
- No ads, and we never sell your data.
- No notifications designed to pull you back for their own sake.
- No friction designed to stop you leaving.
- Your data is yours: you can download it, and delete your account, at any time. Our Privacy Policy explains exactly how.
09For every chapter
Relationships change, and so do the people in them. Attune is not only for couples:
- Personal is for anyone between relationships or waiting on a partner: private reflection, self-knowledge quizzes, and your own patterns.
- Healing is a private, self-paced journey after a relationship ends. It never blames, never diagnoses anyone, and never tells you to go back or move on. Its question is not “what went wrong?” but “what did this teach me, and what do I carry forward?”
When a relationship ends, it ends with care: your partner is not sent a notification, you both get time to read back and keep what matters, and then your shared chat is closed for good.
10What we stand on
Attune draws on decades of research into how people love: attachment theory, which began with John Bowlby and explains why the patterns we learn early follow us into adult relationships; Sue Johnson's work showing that most arguments are really about one question — are you there for me?; the long study of how couples argue and repair; and Carl Rogers' insight that people grow when they feel genuinely heard, not corrected.
We are honest about how strong the evidence is. Each of Attune's quizzes is described by the quality of the research behind it, and where the evidence is weak, we say so.
11Who makes Attune
Attune is made by Bars Opus, an independent studio. We are building it slowly and carefully, because the thing it holds — the relationship between two people — deserves that. If you have thoughts, we would love to hear them at support@barsopus.com.
